Creatively challenging, wondrously healing,
poetry speaks 
to heart and soul

Hours in the attic writing

Afternoons at the stables riding

Evenings in her room reading

Cake and candy secret sneaking

Summers of menu orders serving

Parties spent in shadows observing

Practice at piano crooning

Long walks in the woods communing

Weekends at a bar moonlighting

And always always all ways

writing

Suspicion

I should have listened to my gut

when it cringed with doubts, but

I wanted to believe it

wasn’t as bad as I perceived

all that talk of guns and

order being needed more than

understanding, empathy, justice

displaying woke’s weakness

 

I should have heard what you were saying

with your privilege, conveying

only shadows of equality,

suspected  roots of superiority

the faith I had in you destroyed

clarity ensued, you toyed

with me, virtually grooming

my will to bend, assuming

I wouldn’t realize what you hid

Yet, unfortunately, I did

said her parents

scorning her earliest

true self ambition.

No, she realized later,

but it is a way

to make a life.
