Creatively challenging, wondrously healing,
poetry speaks
to heart and soul

Hours in the attic writing
Afternoons at the stables riding
Evenings in her room reading
Cake and candy secret sneaking
Summers of menu orders serving
Parties spent in shadows observing
Practice at piano crooning
Long walks in the woods communing
Weekends at a bar moonlighting
And always always all ways
writing

Suspicion
I should have listened to my gut
when it cringed with doubts, but
I wanted to believe it
wasn’t as bad as I perceived
all that talk of guns and
order being needed more than
understanding, empathy, justice
displaying woke’s weakness
I should have heard what you were saying
with your privilege, conveying
only shadows of equality,
suspected roots of superiority
the faith I had in you destroyed
clarity ensued, you toyed
with me, virtually grooming
my will to bend, assuming
I wouldn’t realize what you hid
Yet, unfortunately, I did

Make a Life

Writing is no way
to make a living,
said her parents
scorning her earliest
true self ambition.
No, she realized later,
but it is a way
to make a life.
